jewellery-making days & classes
With many years’ teaching experience as Principal and silver jewellery tutor at the Sussex Jewellery School (before relocating to Shropshire), Sarah Jane Whittaker now offers a limited number of beginners’ silver jewellery courses on a private tuition basis, from her studio premises in Telford, Shropshire (just off junction 6 of the M54).
Sarah Jane is a well-trained silver clay tutor, holding the Level 1 and Level 2 Art Clay Diploma, the MCSJ Diploma, and certified in PMC via Rio Grande, and is an experienced teacher (she previously worked as a law lecturer). Her teaching style is supportive and friendly, and she understands that the unfamiliar environment of a working jewellery studio is exciting, but can be a little daunting to the uninitiated, so her mission is to demystify and encourage.
If you’re keen to learn silver jewellery-making, or have tried traditional metalwork but found it too tricky, Sarah Jane’s approach (blending traditional silver bench skills such as piercing-out, filing, annealing, soldering and polishing) with more modern silver jewellery-making skills using revolutionary mouldable fine and sterling silver (also known as metal clay, silver clay, Art Clay and PMC) may suit you well.
Tuition fees start at £200 for a one-day beginner’s silver clay course in Telford, Shropshire, excluding materials (which can be ordered at a discount when you book your tuition day: allow approximately £40). You will have Sarah Jane’s individual attention all day, so come ready to have loads of fun, and be prepared to go home with two or more pieces of beautiful silver jewellery that you’ve made yourself (a pair of drop earrings and a pendant), and a whole heap of essential information about materials, tools and suppliers, so you can develop your new-found skills at home.
Tuition days run from 10am-5pm and include mandatory health & safety instruction. Please note that images on this page show Sarah Jane’s own designs: with her help, you will be designing and making introductory pieces of your own design. During your day, Sarah Jane will generously share her skills and technical knowledge with you, but please do not ask her how she makes her own specific designs (as this is sensitive commercial information) or attempt to copy them – far better to develop your own unique design ‘voice’. If you fall in love with a piece of Sarah Jane’s jewellery on this website or on display in the studio during your day, let her know, as students having private tuition are entitled to a 15% discount on any full-priced jewellery bought or ordered on the day.
